What is Physiotherapy?

Physiotherapy is the treatment of injury and disease using physical modalities, such as manipulation, massage, electrical therapies and exercise. A chartered physiotherapist treats injury and disease by correcting and enhancing the body's own healing abilities.

What conditions can a Physiotherapist treat?

Physiotherapy can be used to treat a number of conditions. The physiotherapists at the clinic specialize in treating certain conditions which include:
1. Spinal problems—back or neck pain and stiffness, sciatica and arthritis.
2. Joint problems—arthritis, injury, pain, swelling in joints such as the knee, ankle, shoulder, elbow, hip, etc.
3. Injuries including sports injuries to muscles, ligaments and tendons. Also work-related injuries such as Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI).
4. Fractures/orthopaedic surgery—rehabilitation following fracture or surgery.
6. Obstetrics—postnatal back care and advice.
Early treatment is advisable as this usually results in a more speedy recovery.

What happens at the first appointment?

A full assessment will take place initially to identify the problem and to ensure that the treatment will relate to you and your lifestyle.

Treatment may include mobilization, manipulation, massage, electrotherapy, exercises and advice.

You may consult a chartered physiotherapist without a doctor's referral if necessary, but contact will usually be maintained between your GP and physiotherapist. Some private health insurance schemes require a referral from a doctor.

Advice on prevention of future problems or recurrence will often play an important part in your physiotherapy management.
