Suffer with migraines? How acupuncture can help

According to the Department of Health, eight million people in the UK suffer from migraines. The symptoms of a migraine attack can vary tremendously from person to person, although they commonly include a throbbing headache, nausea and/or vomiting, lack of energy and sensitivity to light. Many people experience additional neurological symptoms, such as a disturbance in their vision or strange tingling sensations, just before or during an attack.

Many suffer from the condition for years. While in some cases it is relatively easy to identify a pattern and avoid certain triggers, in others the attacks appear at random and are difficult to predict. If you suffer from migraines and are finding it hard to cope, you may benefit from acupuncture.

Traditional acupuncture is a modality of Chinese medicine, a system of healing that has been practised in China and other Far Eastern countries for over two thousand years. It involves the insertion of very fine needles into specific points on the body. Placement of these needles helps to raise endorphin levels, relax muscles, relieve stress, and normalise the body function.

According to Chinese medical theory no two migraine sufferers are ever the same – it is essential to differentiate the symptoms according to a variety of factors, such as the location of the pain, the nature of it, what makes it worse or alleviates it, and what the accompanying symptoms are. The acupuncture points chosen, therefore, can be different from patient to patient. Many people find a course of acupuncture tends to benefit them in other aspects, too – my patients often report an improvement in energy and mood as a pleasant ‘side effect’.

Acupuncture is practised at the Waldegrave Clinic for its effectiveness in pain relief and as a stand alone natural treatment to improve overall health and well-being.
