If you are in pain….
You are in pain and discomfort - what do you do?
Your body is resilient, so to suddenly find yourself in pain and lacking mobility can feel both distressing and confusing – how did it happen, what do you do next?
Injury or degenerative changes are common causes of pain. But often it can be simple actions that you innocently and repeatedly do every day. How you drive, sit, lift, use your laptop or mobile can all over a period of time combine to weaken the muscles and joints to a point where they start to fail. This in turn causes you pain and discomfort.
As soon as you start to feel pain or discomfort we advise you to get yourself checked out. You can call the clinic and speak to one of our experienced reception team who will either ask one of our practitioners to call you back - or they will be able to immediately advise who is the best person for you to see.
EMERGENCY!
My back has gone into spasm and I can’t move!
- Don't panic! The most simple of muscle spasms are incredibly painful and can be very frightening – but they are usually resolved quickly.
- Wrap ice or a bag of frozen peas in a tea-towel and place where the pain is most severe for 10-15 minutes every 1-2 hours and the soreness will ease NB: Do not use if you suffer from diabetes or poor circulation.
- Once you are more comfortable and able to move again try gently moving around at regular intervals but please don’t try to push through the pain – if it hurts STOP.
- Rest as comfortably as you can but try not to lie flat on the floor as this can increase pressure on the lower back. If the floor is the only comfortable position, add some support beneath the knees.
- Your GP or pharmacist will be able to prescribe pain relief medication.
- If your pain persists past 48 hours specialist treatment such as chiropractic or physiotherapy is advised to establish the root cause of your problem and administer the right treatment to get you back on the road to recovery.
